Initially, the temple was dedicated to Lord Rishabhadeva, the first Jain Tirthankar. In 1816 A.D., the Bhinmal Jain Sangh took the initiative to renovate the temple. During this time, Acharya Jinendrasuri, a prominent Jain leader, reestablished the Moolnayak (main idol), installing a new idol of Lord Mahavira in place of the original, marking a significant transformation in the temple’s history. This brought a new wave of reverence to the temple, solidifying its status as a key pilgrimage site.
As the years passed, the temple began to show signs of wear, and by 1959 A.D., it was in need of restoration. Once again, the Jain Sangh came forward, and under the guidance of Acharya Vidhachandra Suri, the temple was beautifully restored. In 1961 A.D., the idol of Lord Mahavira was reestablished, breathing new life into the temple, and ensuring that its sacred legacy would continue for generations to come.
One of the temple’s most captivating features is the life story of Lord Mahavira, depicted in vibrant colors on white marble along the inner boundary wall.
