Kharanna Devi Kund: The
Triumph of Divine Justice

In the sacred land of Shreemal, there once lived a widow named Goutami, She had a son named Vichshan, who was her only joy in life. Young Vichsan climbed a Yata tree to play, but while up there, he was bitten by a deadly snake and died. From there Goutami dedicated her life to prayer and penance. However she was tormented daily by a cruel Rakshasa (demon) named Khara. Khara, relentless in his evil pursuits, would not let Goutami find peace in her worship. His presence was a constant source of fear and disruption for her.

Desperate for deliverance, Goutami prayed earnestly to Lord Surya, the Sun God, seeking his intervention to free her from the Khara’s harassment. Moved by her devotion and distress, Surya answered her prayers. From his radiant rays, a fierce and powerful deity emerged, taking the form of a donkey-headed goddess, embodying both strength and divine justice. This goddess descended to the earth with one mission— to vanquish the demon and restore peace to Goutami’s life.

Despite knowing that his end was near, the arrogant Rakshasa continued his evil ways. But the divine donkey-headed goddess struck the demon down in a single blow. The Rakshasa’s head rolled onto the earth, forming a hill, and his demonic presence was wiped away forever. Peace was restored to the land, and Goutami’s prayers had been answered in the most miraculous way.

The place where the Rakshasa was defeated and the goddess manifested came to be known as Kharanna Devi Kund. It became a site of immense spiritual significance, where pilgrims would come to offer prayers to the goddess in gratitude for her triumph over evil. The Kund, filled with the essence of divine justice, symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the protective nature of the divine feminine.

Kharanna Devi, the goddess who saved Goutami from the Rakshasa, is worshiped here as a powerful symbol of justice, strength, and protection. Pilgrims visiting this sacred Kund believe that the goddess watches over them, offering her protection and granting their prayers just as she did for Goutami.
