In ancient times, Sage Kasyap, one of the revered sages, was given the immense task of constructing the universe by his grandfather. To gain the strength needed for this divine mission, Kasyap journeyed to Shreemal and began intense penance. His meditation was so powerful that it caused fear among the other sages, animals, and plants, as if the entire world was holding its breath.

Bhudevi, the Earth,grew worried that his penance might lead to a disaster, like a great flood. She pleaded with Kasyap to stop, fearing that the intense energy he was building could destroy everything. Despite her concerns, Kasyap continued his penance, so deep in meditation that his body became covered in mud, leaving only a mound of earth where he once sat.

Suddenly, a divine linga (a symbolic representation of Shiva) emerged from the ground, tearing through the seven layers of the underworld. A powerful celestial voice, or akashvani, echoed, acknowledging Kasyap’s devotion and asking for blessings. The heavy rains washed away the mud from Kasyap’s body, and he began to pray to Mahadeva (Shiva), seeking help in the creation of the universe.

Pleased with Kasyap’s devotion, Mahadeva granted his blessings, ensuring that the gods would assist Kasyap throughout the cosmic cycle. The linga that appeared during this event was named Kasyapesvara Mahadeva, in honor of Kasyap’s penance. The site where this miracle occurred became known as Kasyapesvara Kund, a sacred place where pilgrims come to seek freedom from sins and divine blessings.
